Ralph’s. Is possibly the oldest supermarket chain in the United States. It was established by George Albert Ralph’s in 1873. It started with one retail store in Sixth and Spring Streets in Los Angeles, California. And more than a century since it opened shop, Ralph’s continues to be the market leader in Southern California. From the beginning it positioned itself as a pioneer in retail. It was the first to introduce self- service counters providing check out stands for its customers to use. George Ralph’s valued the architecture of his buildings so much that he was known to hire the best architects to design them. A few of Ralph’s store buildings are considered historic landmarks in the cities they are located in. The Westwood Village store even caught the eye of well-known photographer Ansel Adams.
